Mother of Sweet Pea - A Love Letter from Mother's Day 2022

Where it all began

Long before I ever thought about releasing music, I made a song just for her.

In 2022, during a season of becoming parents, becoming family, becoming something entirely new, I worked with Songfinch and vocalist Noah Kahlil to create a song called Mother of Sweet Pea. It wasn’t meant for the world. It wasn’t meant for playlists, releases, or validation. It was a private love letter. A way to say things I didn’t yet have language for.

At the time, everything in life felt like it was expanding at once. Responsibility. Love. Fear. Gratitude. The weight of creating a future for someone else. I didn’t know how to turn all of that into words, but I knew I wanted to give her something that held it.

So I made a song.

Me gifting the song I produced for my wife for Mother's Day.

When she listened to it for the first time, she cried. Not performative tears. Not polite ones. The kind of tears that come from being seen without asking to be. That moment stayed with me. Quietly. Deeply.

The song lived on Spotify, but only technically. I never shared it. Never promoted it. It stayed where it belonged — between us. A snapshot of a moment that didn’t need witnesses.

But something changed in me after that.

I didn’t suddenly become a musician. I didn’t start releasing music. What changed was my relationship to sound, emotion, and expression. I realized that music could hold truth in a way nothing else I made ever had. It could say things directly, without having my guards up.

That realization sat with me for a long time.

Years later, as I prepare to finally share my own music — music written by me, shaped by my hands, rooted in my voice and experience — it feels important to honor this moment. Not as a debut. Not as a release. But as an origin.

This song was never the start of a career.

It was the start of listening.

And everything that comes next traces back to that quiet beginning.

About the song Mother of Sweet Pea was created in 2022 through Songfinch, with vocals performed by Noah Kahlil. The song was commissioned as a private gift and is shared here only as context for this personal story.
